Summary

In the 1880s, Congress debated the Dawes Act, a law that would break up Native American reservations and give parcels of land to individual Indians. The surplus reservation lands could then be sold to the government. Supporters argued that the law would help Indians assimilate into mainstream society by encouraging them to become farmers, while opponents argued that it would strip them of their culture and force them into selling their land. Would the Dawes Act help or hurt Native Americans?

This eBook examines the Dawes Act and delves into the pro and con arguments that surrounded the law. It includes a timeline, primary sources, a bibliography, and a "Learn More About" chapter with more information on the topic.
