Summary

In 1823, President James Monroe delivered a speech warning European nations to keep out of the Western Hemisphere and not interfere with the nations of South America and Central America that had recently gained their independence. In return, the United States would not meddle in the affairs of Europe. This policy, which would become known as the Monroe Doctrine, would profoundly shape U.S. foreign policy in the years to come. Was the Monroe Doctrine motivated by democratic ideals or national self-interest? And should the United States have adopted it in the first place?

This eBook examines the Monroe Doctrine and delves into the pro and con arguments that surrounded it. It includes a timeline, primary sources, a bibliography, and a "Learn More About" chapter with more information on the topic.
