Summary

In 1791, slaves in Saint-Domingue, a French colony in the Caribbean, rebelled against their masters in an uprising known today as the Haitian Revolution. Inspired in part by the American Revolution fought just a few years earlier, the revolutionaries of Saint-Domingue were attempting to gain both their freedom and independence. Some Americans supported their cause, but others—especially slaveholders in the South—feared the impact a successful slave rebellion could have on their region. Should the United States aid the rebels of Saint-Domingue?

This eBook examines U.S. involvement in the Haitian Revolution and delves into the pro and con arguments that surrounded it. It includes a timeline, primary sources, a bibliography, a "Learn More About" chapter with more information on the topic, and a "What If?" chapter speculating on what might have happened had the United States pursued a different policy.
