Summary

Humans have inhabited the desert environment for much of their history, and some of the world's most advanced cultures, including those of Egypt and Mesopotamia, flourished within these parched lands. Today, many of these regions continue to be of great importance: deserts provide the global economy with a high percentage of its metallic resources and about 70 percent of its vital supply of petroleum. Approximately 20 percent of the world's surface is now classified as desert, yet these dry lands are home to more than 10 percent of the world's people. Sadly, many desert countries rank among the world's poorest, most oppressed, and most troubled spots.
