About the Author(s)

John Powell holds an M.A. and a Ph.D. in history and is currently an associate history professor. He has taught the history of American immigration for over 15 years, along with general courses in modern European and British history since 1984. His main area of research has been 19th-century British political history, with a significant interest in British policy toward Ireland. He has published four academic books, 10 articles in refereed journals, 28 shorter articles, two dozen book reviews, and several dozen articles in general reference works. He has had substantial editorial experience, editing several reference publications for Greenwood Press and Salem Press.
