Summary

Attention deficit disorder (ADD), dyslexia, and other learning disabilities affect from five to twenty percent of the population. According to the National Institute of Mental Health, one in seven people has a learning disorder (LD). Often these disorders are not recognized, leading to problems, not only in school, but also in self-esteem and relationships. Straight Talk About Learning Disabilities provides information and suggestions of ways to get help for those who think they may have a LD or know someone whom they think has a LD. Author Kay Marie Porterfield includes a moving preface in which she discusses her own experiences, in school and after graduation, with LDs. The book also provides a list of agencies to contact for help or additional information.

Reviews and Awards

"Dedicated to teachers who refused to give up on her as a 'scatterbrain,' Porterfield (psychology, Oglala Lakota College) provides a primer on rising to the challenges of the common but often hidden problem of learning disabilities. Includes resource and reading lists."
Book News

"By tracing the experiences of three fictionalized students, Gary, Wanda, and Nathan, Porterfield describes what it is like to live with a learning disability, including performing unevenly on tests, struggling to follow directions, having difficulty getting organized, reading very slowly, being easily frustrated, and being seen as immature or dumb. She discusses how and why learning disabilities happen, the different types of disabilities, the emotional impact of the disability, as well as diagnosis and treatment. She devotes a chapter to how people with LD can rise to the challenge of their disability and mentions people who have made great contributions, including Albert Einstein, Winston Churchill, Walt Disney, Stevie Wonder, and Steven Spielberg. The author's own experience with a learning disability is poignantly described in the preface, adding resonance to her subject. Her talent for organizing information has produced an accessible book, but more than that, she offers reassurance. Also included are organizations that offer help, resources on the Internet, and a bibliography."
